A parent's job is never done. Whether your child is 5 or 35, you never stop hoping they'll find happiness, independence, and a place where they belong. For families of people with developmental disabilities, that hope often comes with one more question: Who will love and support my child when I can't be there every day? For Rick Taft, Sunshine Communities became that answer. "Cameron needed an environment to live in that would allow him to grow and mature as a young man," Rick shared. "He required a place that had the ability to care for him."
Looking back, Rick says the decision has been life-changing. "Cameron has flourished into a bright young man while living at Sunshine. He found his independence and really found himself during the time he has been there." Just as meaningful has been the community surrounding his son. "The staff are amazing and caring people, and many have become like extended family. Certainly, they are family to Cameron."
Cameron found the independence that was possible for him, and Rick never stopped being his dad. Some of the family's favorite memories are still the simple ones, like fishing and riding four-wheelers together. Today, Rick has even more to celebrate as he watches Cameron continue to grow through his love of art.
"Cameron really loves creating art, and we enjoy seeing his work featured at the art shows Sunshine supports." For Rick, seeing his son thrive is what every parent hopes for: knowing their child is living a life filled with purpose, belonging, and people who care.
