Beth knows what she wants: a home of her own, technology that works for her and the freedom to make decisions about her life. In February 2026, she moved from California to Sunshine Communities in Ohio to be closer to family, bringing with her a clear vision for the future.

Independence starts with the little things. When Beth worried about getting helpBeth uses a stylus to navigate a tablet with support from a Sunshine Communities staff member. during the night, she worked with her support team to find a solution. Now, an adaptive call button lets her alert staff with the press of a large switch, giving her greater peace of mind and confidence. She's also discovering new ways to stay connected. With a Kindle Fire tablet, voice activation and a stylus, Beth can explore the internet and connect with family and friends. At Sunshine's Tech House, she's tested smart-home technology that lets her control lights, appliances and the television using Alexa, along with adaptive computer equipment.

And Beth isn't just exploring technology for herself. She's helping shape what's possible for others. As part of a focus group developing Sunshine's Tech House in partnership with the Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities, she's shared ideas about accessibility and the needs of people who use wheelchairs.

For Beth, independence isn't about doing everything alone. It's about having the right support, the right tools and a voice in the decisions that shape her life. Her future may include a home or apartment of her own, but the most important part is already taking shape: a life built around her choices, her goals and what matters most to her.
