Wellness Through Water
At Sunshine, our accessible indoor pool is more than a place to swim—it’s a space for healing, growth, and joy. Designed with a raised floor and chair lift, it welcomes individuals of all abilities to safely experience the water.
The consistently warm 92° temperature supports muscle tone, flexibility, and neurological engagement. Used year-round for therapy, swim lessons, and recreation, the pool also hosts community partners like Nationwide Children’s, Metroparks Toledo, and the Autism Academy of Learning. For residents like Jonathan, the pool is a highlight. “It brings him so much joy,” says his mom, Marvene.
The Need: We are replacing and relocating the aging natatorium HVAC system at a cost of $400,000. The new mechanicals will improve ventilation, reduce corrosion, and lower long-term plumbing and maintenance costs.

"The partnership was formed through Sunshine's therapy team assisting our school in finding the location for our students’ monthly swim sessions. Sunshine staff were very knowledgeable and accommodating to our students with disabilities. The pool was safe, well maintained, well managed, and provided a sensory-friendly experience for our students.
The warm water was great for our students with physical differences and sensory needs. The chair lift was important for students with limited mobility and allowed them the same experience as their peers.
Our students at the Autism Academy of Learning have very limited opportunities to participate in activities outside of school and home safely. Sunshine provides a safe environment where our students can experience swim sessions involving appropriate play with classmates, learning to swim to the best of their ability, and simply enjoying a group trip. Our students benefited greatly from this!"
