A Club for Everyone
The Aktion Club movement puts leadership and service within everyone’s reach—regardless of ability. With more than 6,400 members worldwide, this Kiwanis-family initiative empowers adults with disabilities to turn ideas into action and friendships into forces for good. Through community service and leadership opportunities, members discover their strengths and make a real impact.
Sunshine’s Unique Model
This year, Sunshine Communities launched its own Aktion Club—sponsored by The Maumee Kiwanis Club—introducing a new approach to the traditional model. While most clubs are hosted by Boards of Developmental Disabilities or independent providers, Sunshine hosts its club directly, offering residential, vocational, therapeutic, and recreational services under one roof.
Ohio recently broadened its support of Aktion Clubs, welcoming those hosted by businesses that employ individuals with disabilities and inclusive recreation programs. Sunshine Aktion Club stands out as the first in Ohio run by a full-service provider—raising the bar for what an Aktion Club can be.
“This new model could become an example for other Kiwanis clubs looking to form Aktion Clubs in their communities,” said Dick Brulotte, Ohio District Kiwanis Aktion Club Administrator.
Chartering the Club
From the beginning, members stepped up to lead, collaborate, and serve. On the first day of the charter, the club held a ceremony and elected leadership roles including President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and more. They’ve found meaningful ways to give back while growing their leadership skills.

Activities Throughout the Year
Making a Splash
Members rolled up their sleeves, squeezed lemons, and ran a lemonade stand to support Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for childhood cancer research. They didn’t just sell drinks—they built skills in teamwork, customer service, and community connection.
Heartfelt Giving
Sunshine Aktion Club members give with heart. Motivated by the fight against childhood illness, they handcrafted bracelets for patients and staff at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. They also led a school supply drive—filling backpacks with essentials so local students could start strong.
Holiday Cheer
During the holidays, members spread joy throughout the community. They baked treats, sang carols, and decorated cookies.
Pride in Participation
Wearing their custom hats and shirts, members proudly represent their club. These symbols show their pride and commitment to something bigger than themselves.

A Future Fueled by Leadership and Service
“As president of Aktion Club, I want to help others find service projects they’re passionate about,” said Katie Ray. “It’s important to me that we come together and support one another. Being part of this club has given me confidence, but it’s also helped me grow by learning from others. If I could make anyone an honorary member, I’d choose Kamala Harris—because she spreads a message of positivity and hope.”
Sunshine Aktion Club stands as more than just a club—it’s a blueprint for inclusion, leadership, and purpose. And they’re only getting started.
