Community integration is designed to help people optimize their personal, social and vocational competency to live successfully in the community. Sunshine provides opportunities for community engagement, by either building practical skills or increasingly social access and participation for people with disabilities. The community integration enables participants to strive to learn, work, play and socialize successfully in their local environment, all while enjoying the benefits of an active, engaged lifestyle. Each individual in the community integration possesses a unique potential; a potential to create, grow, learn and adapt.
Sunshine focuses on empowering each individual to enjoy a fulfilling and meaningful lifestyle. Personalized schedules are designed to fit the needs and interests of each individual by utilizing a person-centered thinking philosophy. Sunshine recognizes that when disabilities limit a person’s ability to communicate, socialize, or engage, a focus on integrative methods and learned skills is important.
Some community-based services may help build the skills necessary for simple interactions, such as store transactions or friendly exchanges with new people; while others may have a need to focus on self-care or job skills in order to become more self-sufficient. Community integration is designed to keep participants engaged in a variety of activities, choose learning experiences, volunteer in the community, teach responsibilities and learn about nutrition and daily living skills.
Sunshine believes that true community inclusion occurs when everyone, regardless of capability, participates side-by-side. Sunshine provides community-based services in order to incorporate therapeutic and habilitative programs that make community integration more successful and beneficial for all involved. Whether its health maintenance activities, social interactions, or job training, building these practical life skills through community integration provides a path to greater independence. Based on a consumer and family-driven approach, the program utilizes a variety of educational workshops, peer support, group activities, and community-based instruction. Training includes use of public transportation, money management, shopping, using computers, and accessing health and other human services.
