Job Opportunities for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities

October 15, 2019

It’s not uncommon for people with disabilities to feel cautious about searching for employment opportunities. The good news is that today’s job market is very accepting of those with disabilities, making it easier to find employment today than 20 years ago.

A disability, whether it be physical or mental, should never limit someone’s ability (and right) to live a happy and fulfilled life. Having a job that you are passionate about can help you feel like you have a purpose, and everyone deserves that feeling. Here is a list of fields that individuals with disabilities should consider:

Retail and sales

Anyone who has an outgoing and fun personality can succeed in the retail and sales industry. You can generally expect day to day activities to be greeting and helping guests, stocking shelves, packaging items, organizing displays, and keeping stock of inventory. If you like to interact with people, this type of job would be a perfect fit!

Office administrator

Another job for an individual who likes to be around people would be an office admin type position. An office admin is generally responsible for taking phone calls, greeting clients, filing, data entry, and other miscellaneous office tasks. This work can be challenging but if you are organized and willing to learn, anyone can succeed in this position.

If you don’t like to interact with people as much, a manufacturing job like assembly line work may be a great fit. This type of work can be fast paced, but the day to day work is about the same. Meaning that if routine and pattern is very important to you, this line of work should definitely be considered.

Some people love the outdoors and getting their hands dirty which would make agriculture and farming a great career choice. Most agriculture jobs aren’t very social focused, so if you are uncomfortable in social situations this could be a good fit. Agriculture and farming is very fulfilling work and there are always job opportunities available.
